Overview of Male Sex Dreams

Men think about sex often. How often? One study found men think about sex once or twice an hour. That seems right.

But how often do men dream about sex?

A couple of studies give insight into male sex dreams. The results were very surprising.

Male Sex Dreams Study #1

In the first study, Sex dreams, wet dreams, and nocturnal emissions, 58 male college students filled a questionnaire which included a list of sexual activities that they could indicate they had dreamed about in the past.

The list included “kissing lips, foreplay, vaginal intercourse, oral intercourse, and anal intercourse.”

The students were asked if they had “ejaculated during a dream” and whether or not the “ejaculation was in response to a dream image.”

Here are the results of the first study:

Other Findings Regarding Male Sex Dreams:
95% of respondents dreamed about sex with a woman, with the most common forms of sexual act being foreplay and vaginal intercourse.

Most respondents reported that they dreamed of vaginal intercourse with a woman about 9 times a year.

80% of respondents reported having had a wet dream at least once.

Men dreamed about women who were complete strangers the most, of which 1/3 were teachers.

Men dreamed about their mothers 10% of the time.

Nearly 12% of heterosexual participants dreamed about engaging in various types of homosexual activities.

Male Sex Dreams Study #2

The second study examined the sleeping position and the relationship with erotic dreams.

670 college students (34% male, 66% female) were asked about their dreams; how often they had dreams, the types of dreams, and the intensity of the dreams.

The students were also asked how often they sleep in different positions, including on their front, back, and side.

The majority of participants (71%) reported having one dominant sleeping position. For most (72%), this was sleeping on their side. The rest reported sleeping on their backs (23%) or on their stomachs (5%).

Erotic dreams were unrelated to sleeping on one’s back or side; however, they were linked to sleeping on one’s stomach.

The more frequently people slept on their stomachs, the more likely they were to report dreams about sex and about being nude. Also, sleeping on one’s stomach was also related to dreams of being locked up or tied up, being smothered, as well as seeing UFOs.

Why was sleeping face down linked to having more frequent sex dreams? The study couldn’t say with certainty; however, the author of the study believes that this position creates some amount of physical pressure on the genitals and that this is being transferred into people’s dreams, thereby making them more likely to be erotic in nature.

The author of the study also theorized that because sleeping on one’s stomach can put pressure on the chest and potentially make breathing difficult, these sensations might be converted to dreams about being confined or suffocated.

Final Thoughts

The results of these studies are interesting. Fantasies about sex with strangers, kissing an alien or kissing a rock, for example, either show the wide array of desires men have, or how messed up men can be. I’m not a psychologist so I can’t say.

But dreaming about kissing a rock? I don’t understand that.

I found it surprising that men only dream about sex with a woman, on average, 9 times a year. That seems so low given how often men think about sex when they are awake.
