How To Use “Whom” In Your Dating Profile

Before using the word “whom”, you better know when to use “who” vs “whom.”

Shundalyn Allen of Grammarly points out this tip: “Whom should be used to refer to the object of a verb or preposition. When in doubt, try this simple trick: If you can replace the word with ‘he’ or ‘she,’ use who. If you can replace it with ‘him’ or ‘her,’ use whom.”

Sometimes you may have to rearrange the sentence to see which fits, as you’ll see below. As an example, let’s look at this generic sentence you may find on a dating profile:

“I am looking for a woman who/whom enjoys dancing.”

Which do you use?

Using Shundalyn’s tip above, you could substitute “she” and “her” to determine which correct is correct:

“She enjoys dancing” or “Her enjoys dancing.”

Clearly, you would use “who” which would result in the following sentence: “I am looking for a woman who enjoys dancing.”

Another example would be this: “I work as an IT support specialist for a large company. I love my job and interacting with the people who/whom I help on a daily basis.”

This is more of a detailed example but is necessary to show you when to use “who” or “whom.”

Take the clause “who/whom I help.” As I mentioned above you may have to rearrange the sentence which we’ll do here.

Change the clause “who/whom I help” to “I help who/whom.” Then we substitute “he” and “him” to see which works.

“I help he” doesn’t sound right, does it? What does sound better is “I help him.” So, the correct option would be I work as an IT support specialist for a large company. I love my job and interacting with the people whom I help on a daily basis.
