Sperm Motility and Cell Phone Usage
Do you keep your cell phone in your pocket?
If so, take it out of your pocket now and continue reading.
The radiation from your cell phone could be affecting your sperm motility; and possibly more.
What Is Sperm Motility
Sperm motility is the ability of the sperm to move properly through the female reproductive tract.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the categories of sperm motility are as follows:
Grade A – (fast progressive) sperms are those which swim forward fast in a straight line – like guided missiles.
Grade B – (slow progressive) sperms swim forward, but either in a curved or crooked line, or slowly (slow linear or non linear motility).
Grade C – (non-progressive) sperms move their tails, but do not move forward (local motility only).
Grade D – (immotile) sperms do not move at all.
Cell Phone Usage and Sperm Motility Studies
One study, “Effect of cell phone usage on semen analysis in men attending infertility clinic: an observational study“ found that the use of cell phones adversely affected the quality of semen in the 371 participants by decreasing the sperm count and the above mentioned motility, with the increase in daily use of a cell phone.
The study found that there was a significant decrease in the proportion of Grade A sperm with increase in daily transmission time of cell phones, while the proportion of slow motile sperm (Grade B) increased with the increase of duration of daily transmission time.
In other words, the longer the participants used a cell phone, there was a higher the proportion of Grade B (bad) sperm and a lower proportion of Grade A (good) sperm.
In another study, Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation from a Cellular Phone on Human Sperm Motility: An In Vitro Study, the results showed that exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted by cell phones led to a significant decrease in sperm motility.
Cell Phone and Sperm Motility
So, here are the facts regarding the studies:
Fact #1: There was a significant decrease in the quality of sperm with increased daily cell phone usage.
Fact #2: The amount of slow moving sperm increased with the increase of daily cell phone usage as well.
If sperm weren’t enough, another study shows that cell phones can cause other issues to your body. You can read another blog post I created regarding the association between cellphones and erectile dysfunction.
Do you think it’s a good idea to keep your cell phone in your pocket?
I certainly don’t.
Look at it this way, if your cell phone is possibly affecting your sperm quality and causing erectile dysfunction; what else is it doing to your body?
Only time will tell as more studies are done.
Just food for thought.
