We all know flowers have an effect on women.

You have probably given flowers to a woman on her birthday, anniversary, Valentine’s day, some sort of special event, or just “because.”

Why?

Because women love flowers of course.

Flowers make women happy.

Studies back this up.

One study, Facial reactions to emotional stimuli: Automatically controlled emotional responses, found that participants who were shown flowers reacted with positive facial reactions.

Another study, An Environmental Approach to Positive Emotion: Flowers, presented women with either a bouquet of flowers or a fruit basket. The women who received the flowers smiled more frequently than women who received the fruit basket.

Cleary flowers have a positive effect on a woman’s emotion.

But can flowers alone make a guy more attractive to women?

The answer, according to the study “Say it with flowers: The effect of flowers on mating attractiveness and behavior“, is YES!

What Attracts Women: Scenario 1

In the first part of the study to determine what attracts women, women were randomly assigned to one of two indoor conditions (a room with flowers vs. a room with no flowers).

In the experiment, a laptop was placed on a coffee table which had 3 vases.

In the scenario where there were flowers, the vases had roses, French marigolds, and daisies.

In the scenario where there were no flowers, the vases were empty.

The female participants were instructed to sit at the coffee table and watch a 5-minute video of a male who was discussing his eating habits.

The women were told to “observe the target carefully” and to “form an impression of him.”

After each woman watched the 5-minute video she was asked several questions about the man including if she found him physically attractive and sexually attractive. Each woman was asked to rate the man’s attractiveness on a scale of 1 – 7 (1 = not at all attractive, 7 = extremely attractive).

Each woman was also asked whether she would accept a date with him or not.

Study Results

The study found that the man was perceived to be more physically attractive and sexually attractive when the women were exposed to flowers.

The women were also more willing to date the man in the video when there were flowers.

The study showed the simple presence of flowers in the room influenced the women.

The women were more interested in the man in the video as a result of flowers in the vases.

What Attracts Women: Scenario 2

In the second part of study the scenario was similar to the first study, except in this case, an attractive male would watch the same video in an adjacent room.

Again, in half the tests the vases near the laptop the woman was viewing had flowers in them while in the other half of the tests the vases were empty.

After the video was complete, a researcher would bring the man and woman together in the same room to discuss the video.

The researcher would then make excuses to leave the room thereby leaving the man and woman alone.

Once alone the man would say to the woman:

“My name is Antoine, you seem very nice. I wonder, would you give me your phone number? I could call you later and we could get together for a drink somewhere next week.”

He would say the same line in both the “flowers” and “no flowers” scenario.

If the woman said “yes” he would write down her number. If she said “no” he would say “Oh well, never mind. It’s not a problem” and smile.

Study Results

In the scenario where flowers were on the table, 81% of women would say yes and give the man her phone number.

In the scenario where there were no flowers on the tables 50% would say “no” and not give her number to the man.

The difference was significant.

The study found that women who were exposed to flowers more frequently “accepted a courtship request” relative to women who were not exposed to flowers.

Flowers are clearly what attracts women.

Ok, seriously, the study guesses it could be women have a “positive learned response associated with flowers.” Women are familiar with Valentines day and other special events where flowers are presented. Flowers bring about the thought of love and romance. These positive associations could be the a factor.

So, if you find yourself in a room surrounded by flowers and are chatting up a girl go ahead and ask for her number.

If you are meeting a girl for a first date choose a place that possibly has flowers on or near your table.

If it’s your first time at a place you may want to get there early and scope out the place to see if there are areas near flowers and ask the hostess to seat you there.

If you are having a woman over to your place, be sure to place flowers near where you will be hanging out.
