Having a dog is a huge responsibility but it’s worth it.  I have a dog myself and can’t imagine my life without him.  A dog will give you everything and all they ask for in return is your love and companionship.

The first reason why dogs are the best companions is they keep you active and outdoors.  Yes, you have to get off the couch but research shows that most dog owners are more physically active than those who don’t have dogs.

A 2000 National Institute of Health and Welfare study found that dog owners were more likely to do 30 minutes or more of exercise at least five days a week than other people who don’t have dogs.  The benefit of having a dog is a healthier you.

People show improvements in their health, and they engage in healthier behaviors after just one month of owning a pet, according to a 10-month study published in 2011 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

A dog forces you get up and get outdoors.  Be it a hike, a day at the beach, or even a walk around your neighborhood; owning a dog gets you outside and forces you to burn calories.

2. Dogs Are The Perfect Wingmen

Another reason why dogs are the best is that walking your dog helps you get more women.  That’s right, women find you more attractive when they see you walking your dog.

Who knows why this is the case but who am I to argue with studies and experts.  I’ve dated women who had dogs as well and it’s true that even when we fight the “energy” can change after an argument because, for whatever reason, dogs are smart and pick up on things and can lighten the mood.  Go figure.

4. The Perfect Support System

Do you know why dogs are the best type of support system? Because of their unconditional love.  Any dog owner can attest to the fact that a dog can help turn around any bad day.

The study “Friends With Benefits: On the Positive Consequences of Pet Ownership” found that people who have dogs are less lonely than those who don’t have a dog.  It’s so true.  You’re never truly alone when you have a dog.

A dog will help you bounce back faster too.  Dogs are always happy to see you. As soon as you walk through that door you know that you are their world.  A dog will always cheer you up when you’re down and you’ll never be lonely while owning one.

I’ve had my share of tough days at work, downs in life, and painful breakups.  One constant has been my dog.  He’s my co-pilot on road trips, my court jester, and always puts a smile on my face.

5. They Show You How To Enjoy Life

The daily rigors of life can get in the way of fun.  Dogs show you that you need to live in the “here and now.” Dogs never worry about the past and don’t think about the future.

A dog is all about right now.  Live for the moment!  This moment.  I’m not saying forget about your future, but dogs teach you to live for the present. You don’t know what tomorrow will bring so embrace today.  It doesn’t get better than that.
